FATHER MESO PALUKU IS INSTALLED REGIONAL SUPERIOR OF EAST AFRICA

May Day, also known as International Workers' Day or International Labour Day, is a national holiday in almost 80 countries of the world. This day is dedicated to a holy man whose name is Saint Joseph. Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster-father to Jesus Christ, Saint Joseph is the patron Saint of all  the workers.

To mark this International Labor Day which coincides with the Feast day of  Saint Joseph the worker, The Assumption of the Eastern African Region, made up of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda has celebrated the official installation of Father Jean-Marie Meso as the New Regional Superior who is taking over after Father Simon Njuguna.

Taking place in Emmanuel House, this great celebration started at 5 pm with the Eucharist which was presided over by the Provincial of Africa, Father Protais Kabila. First of all, he officially welcomed Father Jean-Marie Meso in his responsibility as Regional Superior of East Africa region for three years. Secondly, he congratulated Father Njuguna for the great work he has done in the Region during his mandate. During his homely the Provincial took this opportunity to provide a number of advices to the assembly and mostly to Father Meso.

“Fr. Meso, you have been our provincial for two terms. So you know that spiritual leadership is the opposite of what most of people think. Spiritual leadership is servant leadership. You are not to be served but you are called to serve your brothers assumptionnists, your sisters Oblates of the Assumption, to serve our alliance religious and lay. Here the recommendation of our congregation: to live the spirit of full communion with all brothers under your responsibility, to build strong unity, strong family, confidence, friendship in liberty, relationship of heart to heart, fraternity without borders and true collaboration. Do this with the R.F, E.S of d’Alzon. Give joy, peace to your people. With your team, try your best to show the true image of an assumptionnist. Your duty today is to give your life as a ransom for many like Jesus did (Matthew 20:28). Jesus was most definitely a leader. But he did not lead by giving out orders or by supervising. Jesus led by being a servant and serving alongside of His followers”.

In the light of the above statement, the Provincial insisted that the New Regional Superior should adopt the virtue of ‘humility’, an attitude that places the sheep ahead of the leader. This attitude depicts that the Regional Superior will be considering his religious more important than himself. He added saying that people usually want to follow a person who serves alongside them and sets an example for them. They also want their leader to listen to them and to apologize when something has gone wrong.

After the provincial’s homely, Father Meso took the opportunity to present  his co-workers. His counsel is constituted by: Fr. BARASA Jacob WELIKHA (first assistant), Fr. KIARIE NDUATI John (secretary), Fr.  KASEREKA MUKOSA Eric (Treasurer), and Fr. KIZITO VYAMBWERA Henri. His formation commission is formed by:  Fr. BAHATI Antigon (superior of the formation), Fr. MUTULIRANO LWAYIVWEKA Jean-Marie (secretary), Fr. Gilles Blouin, Fr. KASEREKA SALAMU Germain and Fr. KATUNGO LUKOMBOLA Arnold will be members of the formation commission.

Those who attended that event are, as follows: the three assumptionnist communities of Kenya - Katua, Djiru and Emmanuel House – and some of the Oblates sisters of the Assumption from Katua. The ceremony that started with the Eucharist, ended with the sharing of a fraternal supper in the dining room of Emmanuel House community.

FELICITATIONS AU P. MESO NOMME SUPERIEUR REGIONAL DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'EST

Le P. Protais, Supérieur provincial d’Afrique en son Conseil a nommé ce 18 avril 2015 le P. MESO PALUKU Jean-Marie comme Supérieur régional de l’Afrique de l’est pour un mandat de trois ans à compter à partir du 1er mai 2015. Cette décision vient de la consultation des religieux de l’Afrique de l’Est qui ont répondu massivement et ont proposé au provincial des noms des religieux capables de conduire cette région. C’est à la fin du mandat du P Simon Njuguna qui a succédé au P. Protais que cette responsabilité est confiée aujourd’hui au P. Meso. Le conseil provincial remercie sincèrement le P. Simon qui a fait un grand travail de leader en se donnant pour l’ouverture de nouvelles fondations à Kyabakadde, Katua, Digodigo et Murutunguru. La mission continue avec d’autres projets qui pointent à l’horizon et des défis qui exigeront l’implication de tout le monde dans la croissance de cette région qui fait déjà ses preuves. DECES DU P. HERVE LE HENAFF AU BRESIL

Un missionnaire meurt, P. Hervé, un autre le remplace, P. Roger

Juste pour vous informer que La province a.a. du Brésil fut endeuillée le samedi 28 mars suite à la mort du père Hervé Le Henaff. Il fut l’un des anciens missionnaires français ici au Brésil. Il est né le 22 février 1934 à Quimper  et il est arrivé ici au Brésil en octobre 1964. Il a servi comme professeur des mathématiques à Eugenopolis. Il a aussi été pendant plusieurs années curé de la paroisse Sainte Trinité de Rioet de Saint Sebastien de Eugenopolis où reste le père Jules Mumbere. C’est depuis 2009 qu'il restait dans la communauté de Pinhal pour des raisons sanitaires. Quelques jours avant sa mort, Il accusait des  problèmes de pneumonie. Et soudain, Il a été conduit à un des hôpitaux de la place où il a rendu l’âme, samedi 20 mars à 19heures. Que son âme repose en paix.

UN JEUDI SAINT COLORÉ DE L’INSTITUTION DES ACOLYTES ET LECTEURS

 En ce soir du jeudi 2 avril 2015 où l’Église universelle fête la Sainte cène de Notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, la communauté Assomptionniste Emmanuel d’Alzon de Kinshasa, en communion avec l’Église universelle, célèbre cette fête dite des prêtres, la fête de l’institution de l’Eucharistie. Au cours de la célébration, seize frères ont été institués lecteurs et huit acolytes.

À 17 heures 30 minutes a commencé l’Eucharistie. Elle a été présidée par le Père Jean-Marie Vianney Thaliwatheka, supérieur régional de Kinshasa, entouré de 6 prêtres membres de la communauté. Les autres membres de la communauté, les proches parmi lesquels les religieuses Oblates de l’Assomption, ont activement pris part à cette célébration. Dans la monition d’ouverture comme dans son homélie, le président de l’Eucharistie a rappelé que ce jeudi saint est une grande fête, la fête des prêtres. Plus précisément dans son homélie, il a insisté sur l’humilité et le service de Jésus, prêtre par excellence.

Jésus, disait le prédicateur, se fait humble serviteur. Il se met à genoux pour laver les pieds de ses disciples. Par son humilité et son service, il ne donne pas simplement un exemple en caractère pédagogique à ses disciples, car ce serait pure caricature des actes caritatifs, pure mise en scène. Bien au contraire, Jésus en lui-même, sa vie tout entière est pur exemple. C’est lui le modèle d’humilité et de service. Humilité et service sont comme pierre angulaire de son message. Comment découvrir l’humilité et la serviabilité chez les hommes ?

En effet, dans la société, certains hommes sont humbles mais ne sont pas serviables ; d’autres sont serviables, mais ne sont pas humbles ; d’autres encore ne sont ni humbles ni serviables. Il y en a qui sont à la fois humbles et serviables. Pour être humble et serviable, il faut développer une mémoire historique, comme nous a rapporté la première lecture. Selon cette lecture, Israël transmet sa mémoire à toutes les générations en célébrant la pâque. Ainsi chaque génération se sent-elle concernée par cet événement pascal mémorable. Pour être humble et serviable, a continué le prédicateur, il faut lutter contre la division, comme nous indique la deuxième lecture. Cette lecture nous montre que nous sommes tous frères. Notre identité est d’être hommes de communion. D’où le sens de l’Eucharistie et de ce jeudi saint.

En ce jour, Jésus lave les pieds de ses apôtres, travail d’esclave, et nous invite par ce fait à faire de même. Par ce geste humble, Jésus veut passer de la conception pyramidale de nos sociétés à la conception circulaire, celle du corps dont chaque membre joue son rôle. Les responsables sont par là appelés, aujourd’hui, à se mettre humblement au service des autres sans les catégoriser comme sur une toile d’araignée. Ils vont accepter de se mettre à genoux et de servir leurs frères, comme l’a fait le Christ. Telle est la vocation du prêtre, de l’acolyte, du lecteur. Chacun doit exercer son ministère en étant à genoux. Il en est de même pour tous les autres chrétiens.

S’agissant de l’acte de laver les pieds, le prédicateur a procédé à la mise en application de la conception circulaire de services à rendre humblement les uns aux autres. Il a lavé le pied du premier frère. Celui-ci a lavé celui du suivant et ainsi de suite jusqu’aux autres membres de l’assemblée. Puis l’on est passé à la collation des ministères.

Seize frères ont été appelés par Père Vincent Leclercq, représentant le supérieur local, le Père Michaël Tsongo, pour recevoir le lectorat. Il s’agit des frères Akelessim Fabrice, Chibalonza Marc, Dokoui Vivien, Lidaou Armand, Lutunde Marius, Sikulisimwa Heshima, Kasambya Moïse, Mowavingi Erasme, Safari Gerlace, Kaghoma Dieusé,  Asina Willy, Kyakere Josué, Vahoterana Éric, Mukwama Jean-Glory, Badese Toussaint-Flavien et Musosotya Jean-Paul. Après l’appel, le supérieur régional a montré à ces élus ce en quoi consiste leur ministère. Il a prié pour eux, puis il leur a remis, en tour de rôle, l’instrument de leur ministère, la sainte Bible en prononçant cette formule : « Frère N. Recevez le livre de la sainte Écriture et méditez fidèlement cette Parole. Qu’elle s’enracine dans votre cœur et qu’elle fructifie dans le cœur des hommes. » Le lauréat répondait : « Amen ! »

Ceux qui ont été appelés à l’acolytat, les frères Houssou Georges, Mutahya Augustin, Maliyabwana Uzima ni mali, Kishindo Aymar, Muhumbania Valère Dubois, Mathe François, Sezouhlon Lucas et Mbwamosi Donatien ont suivi la procédure semblable à celle des lecteurs avec ceci de spécifique : Ils ont revêtu le surplus, ils ont reçu le pain et la coupe de vin l’un après l’autre pendant que le supérieur régional prononçait cette formule : « Frère N. Reçois ce pain et cette coupe de vin pour la célébration de l’Eucharistie et montre-toi digne de servir la table du Seigneur et l’Église. »

À la fin de l’Eucharistie, 20 heures, les convives ont partagé le repas de fête agrémenté par les pas de danse dans la cour de la communauté. Ceux qui ont été institués lecteurs et acolytes viennent d’enter en exercice par le fait même de cette institution. Nous leur souhaitons bonne chance et fructueux ministères.

ORDINATIONS A NJIRU NAIROBI: JACOB, JEAN-MARIE, JEROME, VALENTIN ET RICHARD

 The Lord, whom the Father has sent into the world, has established on march 19^th, 2015, five ministers among his faithful of Nairobi to unite them together in one body. Two of them, Deacon Jacob WELIKHA BARASA and Deacon Jean-Marie MUTULIRANO have been ordained priest and Jerome MASUMBUKO, Valentin NKWER and Richard LUSENGE have been ordained Deacons. These priests are, from now on, able, by the sacred power of orders, to offer sacrifice and to forgive sins. No doubt of it, since they are connected with the Episcopal order, they share the authority by which Christ builds up, sanctifies and rules his Body. All their acts will be made in the person of Christ the Head of the whole body, the Church. Belonging to the same community Katua, the ordination of the two Deacons to priesthood looked really like the birth of twins in the family. Not only their community but the whole outstation of Katua was so glad for giving birth to two priests at once. Since Jacob was ordained Deacon, he has been in charge of Postulants and Aspirants. As he has exercised these responsibilities very well, he will continue the same. Father Jean-Marie MUTULIRANO is and remains treasurer of his community Katua. Saying that, we are meaning that both of the two priests will continue living together until they receive their new appointment.

The deacons will be serving in three areas according to the Roman Catholic Church. First of all, they are the ordinary ministers of the proclamation of the Gospel. They will secondly be serving in liturgical ministry, by putting into practice all what a deacon is called to do in his ministry. They will be also involved in serving the poor and marginalized by working with parishioners to help them become more involved in the ministry of charity. The three Deacons, outlined above, will be respectively keeping their responsibilities as treasures for Djiru Parish (Kenya), Digodigo Parish (Tanzania) and Kijenge Parish (Tanzania) until they get each one a new appointment.

The mass started at 10 am. It was presided over by the bishop David KAMAU, auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi. In his homely, the Bishop invited the ordinand to be the joy and the blessing for the Church. He requested them to keep the Word of God in their love and to stay always with Jesus Christ in prayer.

When the mass ended, everybody was welcome to share a fraternal lunch in the parish compound. Fruitful ministry to these new ministers!

EVOLUTION DE LA SANTE DU P. CLAUDIO DU BRESIL

Bonjour, chers frères!

Nous nous portons bien ici au Brésil. Le père Claúdio évolue bien, quoi que cela soit lent. Il est déjà délivré de l'hôpital. Je suis présentement dans sa communauté pour donner, tant soit peu, un petit coup de main. Il n'est pas encore capable de se redresser lui même.Il reste soit au lit soit dans la chaise roulante.

Tous ses membres étaient paralysés. Pour le moment ceux du côté gauche ont plus ou moins repris leur fonctionnement. Le problème réside aux membres du côté droit dont l'évolution est lente. Union de prières. P. Roger Wasukundi,aa.

Sister HELEN'S DEATH IN TANZANIA

On March 9th, 2015 while the Religious of the Assumption were preparing to celebrate the birth in heaven of Saint Marie-Eugenie their fonder, death knocked down Sister Helen, R.A., missionary in Tanzania. On March 10, 2015 evening, the Assumptionists from Emmanuel House joined the Religious of the Assumption in their community in Kawangware for Mass. The mass was blended with mixed feelings since it was the heavenly birthday of St. Marie-Eugénie. It was presided over by Father Paluku Meso Jean-Marie a.a., who reminded, first of all, that we always celebrate a mass as an occasion of joy as we exercise our common ministry and priesthood. Secondly, he said, “we are especially celebrating the memorial of Saint Marie-Eugenie’s birthday in heaven” (March 10, 1898). “We are sad as we are mourning our beloved sister Helen who has passed away.” As people who have lived with her, during this mass, we thank the Lord for her life which has been a grace for us. We are all on pilgrimage here on earth. This world is not our permanent home. It is a temporary place for us to live. Believer or non-believer, we are all passing away. Death is our common way of ending our life in this world, and of entering our eternal home.

Today the death of our Sister Helen helps us once again to put things into perspective. Death does not have an age. It can occur any time in our life. The length of life does not make its value. It does not matter whether a person has lived a long or a short time. What makes the value of life is its quality. Sometimes short lives are the most valuable and honorable in the eyes of God. All depends on how a person sought to please God in his life. Sister Helen is certainly one of those who sought to please God. She vowed to follow Christ in the Congregation of the Religious of the Assumption where she committed all her life. Faithful disciple of Saint Marie Eugenie, she kindly accepted soon after her first vow to work as missionary in Africa where she has been since 1956. Sister Helen has endured not only the challenges of the mission but also the suffering of her illness. With faith and hope she never turned against her God.  Being among the founders of Kenyan mission, she was so much involved in welcoming the Augustinians of the Assumption in the eastern part of Africa. May her soul rest in peace. After mass, we all went to the dining room not only for sharing a fraternal supper but also for hearing a lot about Sister Helen. Many testimonies about her brought us to conclude that sister Helen is really welcome in the kingdom of God.
