Gilles Blouin is celebrating Golden Jubilee

Assumptionists ! Saint Augustine is our patriarch. To my knowledge, this statement does not newly appear at the sight of the Augustinians of the Assumption. All of us are absolutely aware of that. This is the reason why I intend to share with you how my heart was full of joy to celebrate the saint Augustine day 2015. Saint Augustine, called ‘Augustine of Hippo’ was born in Thagaste, current Algeria, in North Africa (354). Augustine was a brilliant young man whose early life was wild and unsettled. He was converted by the prayer of his mother Saint Monica and baptized by Ambrose, bishop of Milan, in 387.  After his conversion, Augustine decided to live an ascetic life. In Africa, he became Bishop of Hippo. That is when they started calling him Augustine of Hippo. He wrote many treaties that present an exceptional theology and spirituality and have had great influence. According to him, the two dimensions, faith and reason, should not be separated nor opposed, but rather go forward together. In the Contra Academicos, III, 20, 43, he wrote after his conversion, that faith and reason are ‘the two forces that lead us to knowledge. In the Sermons 43; 9, he expresses again the coherent synthesis between faith and reason: Crede ut intelligas that should be translated into “believe so that you may understand”.

Saint Augustine day is the day that the Lord has made. Marked by a golden jubilee and a renewal of vows, our community of Emmanuel House really rejoiced. Father Gilles Blouin (Canadian), missionary in Kenya and member of the community, was, as already pointed out, celebrating his 50^th anniversary of his profession in the congregation. Four brothers: Blaise, Emile, Jean-Claude and Fabrice took also the same opportunity to renew their vows. The ambiance in the community was so colorful. The mass started in the evening, at 18h00. It was presided over by father Gilles, the jubilerian. He was surrounded by 6 priests ‘Three Asumptionists, one Montfort and two Palautins. In his homely, Father Gilles, focused on love: God is love. We mention the presence of the Religious of the Assumption and the Oblates of the Assumption. Many other religious from the neighborhood attended also the celebration. After the Eucharist, all the participants were hosted a cocktail party in the dining room to celebrate the day.

            Here is a brief story of father Gilles, our jubilerian. He was born in Quebec (Canada) and entered the alumnate in the next town from where he was born. His novitiate was in the USA (1964-1965) and studied theology partly in Europe and in Quebec. His ministry was mostly in pilgrimage centers (Canada and Jerusalem) and in formation houses (Canada, Philippines and now in Kenya). May God bless Father Gilles and remain his guardian for the rest of his life in the congregation and here on earth.

THE PERPETUEL AND TEMPORARY VOWS CELETRATED AT EMMANUEL HOUSE

God has been calling people since the origins of the world. In the Old Testament as well as in the New. If we turn our eyes towards the Old Testament we shall find that God called Abraham to leave his father’s home and to go to the land he «the Lord» was going to show him. Gn 12.1. He also called Moses and sent him to the king of Egypt so that he can lead his people out of slavery. Exod. 3. 10. On the same path of calls, he also called Jeremiah:  « I chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born, I selected you to be a prophet to the nations». Jer. 1.5.  In the New Testament, we have figures like Mary, «The Virgin of Nazareth who was called to become mother of the Messiah. Lk 1:30. In Matthew  4, 19, Jesus said to his disciples «come with me and I will teach you how to catch men». Is that not another kind of call? Some people nowadays, ask whether God is really still calling people from their own businesses for his mission the same way he used to do in the past. Of course, yes. But, if there can be a grain of difference it is only that God actually manifests himself in the Church built on the Apostles. Since the Church has gotten the mandate from Jesus Christ (Matthew 16: 18-19.), it is through this Church that the power of God is still moving all over the world. In this same way, that power of God, that is «the spirit of God» lent today upon the Assumption of East Africa.

With young religious we are Brothers

In the mass that took place at Emmanuel House, this power of God called brother Maticha Nyarombe to the perpetual vows and four novices ( Augustine Byamukama, Edward Kabiito, Kizito Ssembajjwe and Dominic Muendo Mutinda) to the temporary vows. The celebration started at 5 pm. It was presided over by Fr. Emmanuel Kahindo Kihugho, General Vicar of the Congregation. In his homily, Fr. Emmanuel Kahindo Kihugho emphasized the image of the good shepherd who knows and even suffers with his sheep.  The Christians who attended this celebration came from four sides of the world. This, made the mass to be celebrated in many languages.  Congratulations to Fr. Kombi, who did his best to print the readings in three languages: English, French and Spanish. This initiative helped all the community present to walk on the same path. The five congregations of the great family of the Assumption which are Religious of the Assumption RA, Augustinians of the Assumption A.A. Oblates of the Assumption O.A, Little Sisters of the Assumption L.S.A or PESA, the Orants of the Assumption ORA, were represented. This chance was possible because of the meeting they have been holding in Nairobi since July, 9, 2015. At the end of the mass, that is at 7:15 pm all the Christian communities and the invited guests which attended the celebration were invited to the dining room. Together with the brothers and sisters in the Assumption, they cheered the newly committed brothers.

To all the celebrants of the day, using the words of Francis, our Pope, in his last letter on Consecrated Life, I wish them «to leave behind a worldly Church with superficial spirituality  and pastoral trappings, in order to breathe the pure air of the Holy Spirit who frees the religious from the self-centeredness cloaked in an outward religiosity bereft of God. They should not allow themselves to be robbed of the Gospel». And, as a member of the community of Emmanuel House, I sincerely testify that my heart overflows with gratitude to all of those who have actively and silently worked hard to make this day a joyful and memorable one. May God reward them abundantly.

LA MOISSON EST ABONDANTE DANS LA VIGNE DU DIOCÈSE DE BUTEMBO-BENI

 Au lendemain des ordinations tant diaconale que sacerdotale, nous voici entrés dans la dynamique bienheureuse des cérémonies des vœux de religion.
*Le 15 août 2015, chez les Sœurs Oblates de l'Assomption, cinq jeunes ont émis leurs vœux de religion : pauvreté, chasteté et obéissance. 

*Le 22 août 2015, ce fut la célébration des vœux des Sœurs P.S.P.: huit d'entre elles se sont engagées définitivement dans la Congrégation.

AU GRÉ DES ORDINATIONS AU SEIN DU DIOCÈSE DE BUTEMBO-BENI

        Le 26 juillet 2015 marque d'un caractère sans pareil une journée mémorable sur toute l'étendue du diocèse de Butembo-Beni. Trente jeunes  -14 prêtres et 16 diacres-  viennent d'être respectivement investis  dans leurs ministères sacerdotal et diaconal.

      Comme on peut s'en apercevoir, la célébration a été couronnée d'une diversité notable. Les nouveaux ordonnés sont membres de différentes familles religieuses: les Diocésains (Abbés), Comboniens, Apôtres de Jésus, Carmes, Croisiers, Sacré-Cœur, Augustins de l'Assomption dits Assomptionnistes. 
       Ce n'est pas tout! La messe était célébrée par Son Excellence Monseigneur Sikuli Paluku Melchisedech, évêque du Diocèse de Butembo-Beni, accompagné de Monseigneur Kataka Janvier, évêque du Diocède de Wamba. Ils étaient entourés d'une centaine de prêtres.

 

COLLATION DES GRADES ACADÉMIQUES À L'ISEAB

En ce 30 juillet 2015, l'Institut Supérieur Emmanuel d'Alzon de Butembo (ISEAB) vibre au rythme de la collation des grades académiques. 

 Le nombre de lauréats s'élève à 30 : 8 en section de Philosophie, 21 en Sciences Techniques de Développement et 1 en Sciences de l'Information et de la Communication.

 Le personnel enseignant et administratif appelle de tous ses vœux la nécessité, pour ces étudiants finalistes, de créer de l'emploi pour vaincre la pauvreté qui a élu domicile dans nos sociétés africaines : 

"Soyez les ambassadeurs de l'ISEAB dans la société et dans le milieu de travail. Ayez la hardiesse dans la lutte pour la 'vie bonne'. Si le sens éthique, l'honnêteté intellectuelle et morale vous caractérisent désormais, alors vous aurez optimisé vos chances de réussir dans votre vie".

Tout en remerciant le corps enseignants, le personnel administratif et ouvrier, le Directeur Général  -Prof. Dr. Wilfrid Kibanda-  salue les efforts de ces "rares étudiants" qui se sont qualifiés pour jouir de ces honneurs : 

"Chers étudiants, puisque certains d'entre vous quittent définitivement l'ISEAB, je saisis cette occasion pour remercier chacun d'entre vous pour sa contribution au rayonnement et à la construction de l'ISEAB. Nous avons inauguré nos auditoires splendides du site Mirador. Il suffit de passer par le site pour se rendre compte des réalisations de l'année : des auditoires modernes, électrifiés, avec un coin de restauration, l'électrification au panneau solaire de notre bibliothèque. Cette source d'énergie permanente et écologique va favoriser l'accélération de travaux de numérisation de ladite bibliothèque. Je remercie tous ceux qui ont participé à l'opération de collecte des fonds ici et auprès des amis d'ailleurs".

Sur le plan de la coopération, le comité de gestion a veillé au maintien de bonnes relations avec ses partenaires locaux, nationaux et internationaux. Au niveau local, ce même souci va à l'endroit du ministère de tutelle et de la Conférence des Chefs d’Établissement de Butembo.




Dans son mot, le Secrétaire Général Académique  -Prof Omer Kasyakulu-  fait état d'une évaluation succincte de l'organisation des enseignements et activités : 

"La date de la rentrée académique a été fixée au lundi 20 octobre 2014 avec le début des cours du premier semestre 2014-2015, dans toutes les quatre sections organisées par l'Institut Supérieur Emmanuel d'Alzon de Butembo. Il s'agit des sections de Philosophie, de Sciences Techniques de Développement (STD), de Sciences de l'Information et de la Communication (SIC) et de Gestion Informatique (GI)... En fin juin, la plupart des promotions avaient déjà fini les cours; et les examens ont pu être organisés au courant du mois de juillet, y compris les défense et délibération... Que dire des résultats de cette première session? Pas du tout satisfaisants: sur un total de 613, seulement 67 étudiants ont satisfait, c'est-à-dire 11%. Soulignons que l'accomplissement et la réussite des activités académiques et para-académiques de l'année 2014-2015 relève de diverses instances et compétences, à savoir le comité de gestion, les autorités décanales, le comité des étudiants et du centre de recherche ISEAB".

Un fait saillant à l'ISEAB! La section de la Gestion Informatique est très convoitée. Les deux promotions (G1 & G2) réunissent un effectif de 180 étudiants. Dans cette section, les effectifs augmenteront nécessairement l'année prochaine. Le nombre de machines disponibles se révèle insuffisant, quant à l'encadrement pédagogique des étudiants. D'où nécessité d'augmenter l'équipement dès le début de l'année. 

On peut se féliciter, outre l'importante documentation en ligne que des enseignants ont promis mettre en réseau à l'intention des étudiants, de l'acquisition d'une quarantaine de livres informatiques, achetés en Belgique. Un merci sincère et cordial à tous les collaborateurs de l'ISEAB, parents, étudiants, enseignants, ouvriers et amis!

Dear brothers and sisters, I am taking this opportunity to inform you that I had a safe journey from Nairobi to Rome via Qatar. It is unfortunate that I did not get the chance to go to the Congo to greet my Family before travelling due to some unavoidable reasons. But at the same time I am thankful to the Good Lord who has always preceded me and given me the grace of meeting with generous and caring people who never hesitate to take me as part of them wherever I go for mission.

At present, I am in Florence (Firenze) learning the Italian Language. It is in October that I will go back to Rome to start my program of Liturgy at the Pontifical Athenaeum Saint Anselm (Anselmianum).

Pray for me as I pray for you so that God may continue granting us the strength and diligence to spread his Kingdom within us and around us.

DES FORMATEURS ET FORMATRICES DE LA FAMILLE DE L'ASSOMPTION

Du 09 au 23 juillet, des formatrices et formateurs de cinq congrégations de la famille de l'Assomption sont réunis à Nairobi. Pendant deux semaines, ils vont réfléchir sur "L'Esprit de notre famille Assomption dans l'Eglise et dans le monde d'aujourd'hui. Voici les premiers échos des éléments de formation.

Les trois premiers jours de notre session ont été marqués par une expérience très enrichissante, avec beaucoup d'occasions de nous connaître les uns les autres, de prier bien sûr, de travailler ensemble.

Chacune des cinq congrégations de la famille de l'Assomption a partagé les caractéristiques fondamentales des origines de l'institut et de son charisme spécifique. Religieuses de l'Assomption, Augustins de l'Assomption, Oblates de l'Assomption, Petites Sœurs de l'Assomption, Orantes de l'Assomption... Un grand trésor que cette histoire commune marquée par le zèle pour le Règne de Dieu et la transformation de la société. Nous avions lu cette histoire de nos congrégations avant de venir, maintenant elle devenait vivante à travers les présentations, les discussions et, surtout, les rencontres au fil des jours.

Nous avons aussi pris du temps pour voir la manière dont nos congrégations se sont aidées les unes les autres, de façon très variée : par la direction spirituelle, le soin des malades pendant une épidémie, en confectionnant les premiers habits religieux, en prenant les premières photos ! Tout cela nous a fait partager la bénédiction d'appartenir à la famille de l'Assomption et un désir à la fois d'approfondir notre identité de famille spirituelle et de la transmettre aux jeunes en formation. Nous avons posé de solides fondations pour les travaux de prochains jours : à partir de cet apport des origines du 19ème siècle, nous allons réfléchir sur notre rôle en tant que formateurs eu 21ème siècle. C'est un défi que la foi et le témoignage de nos fondateurs et fondatrices nous encouragent à relever !
